Over 1,000 Driving Licences Suspended in Chandigarh for Traffic Violations

The RLA in Chandigarh has revoked about 1481 licences for violations since last year in a crackdown on traffic violators. The most common infringements that led to licence suspension were failure to use helmets, over speeding and use of mobile phones while driving.

Breakdown of Suspended Licence:

#2022:

1. Helmetless driving: 681
2. Over speeding: 242
3. Using mobile phone: 59
4. Drunk driving: 20.

# 2023 (till October):

1. Helmetless driving: 267
2. Over Speeding: 79
3. Using mobile phone: 7
4. Drunk driving: 50
5. Triple riding: 14

Details about the licence suspensions recorded by Chandigarh RTO :

1. The majority of the suspended licences were held by men (1,275).
2. The most common age group for suspended licence was 25-34 years old (519).
3. Two-wheelers were the most common type of vehicle involved in traffic violations (1,227 licence suspended).

Suspension Limits

The duration of licence suspension varies depending on the severity of the violation. For minor offences, the suspension period may be as short as a few days. However, for more serious offences, such as drunk driving or causing accidents, the suspension period can extend to several months or even years. Section 19 of the Law on Motor Vehicles (Motor Vehicles) 1988 and Rule 21 of the Law on Central Motor Vehicle (Central Motor Vehicle Rules) 1989 recommend a six-month driving licence suspension for mobile phone use, speeding, drink driving and jumping a red light. For helmetless riding, the driving licence is suspended for three months with a fine.

The RLA and RTO has been taking various measures to curb traffic violations in Chandigarh, including:

1. Intensive drives against traffic offenders
2. Setting up speed cameras at various locations
3. Imposing heavy penalties for traffic violations

Intelligent Traffic Management Systems in Chandigarh

Chandigarh Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) under its Smart City initiative comprises around 225 ITMS cameras strategically positioned at 47 crucial traffic junctions across the city. These intelligent cameras are equipped with sophisticated technology to capture and analyse traffic violations in real time.The captured images and data from the ITMS cameras are transmitted to the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) of Smart City Limited in Sector 17. Over a dozen traffic police personnel are stationed at the ICCC, operating around the clock to monitor the live feeds from the cameras
