In a bid to combat the persistent air pollution plaguing Delhi and its surrounding National Capital Region (NCR), scientists at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur are proposing a novel solution: artificial rain. This innovative approach involves cloud seeding, a technique that aims to induce rainfall by dispersing substances into clouds to alter their microphysical structure.
The concept of cloud seeding is based on the principle that certain substances, such as silver iodide or salt, can act as condensation nuclei, providing a surface for water vapor to condense around. By introducing these substances into clouds with suitable conditions, scientists can potentially trigger or enhance precipitation
IIT Kanpur’s team, led by Professor Sachchidanand Tripathi, has been actively researching cloud seeding technology for several years. They believe that inducing artificial rain could effectively wash out air pollutants, significantly improving air quality in the region.
The chances of success for this approach are promising, as cloud seeding has been successfully employed in various parts of the world to increase rainfall and mitigate drought conditions.
