The coastal city of Chennai is on high alert as high waves triggered by Cyclone Michaung continue to batter the shoreline. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an ‘Orange’ alert for Andhra Pradesh and adjoining North Tamil Nadu-Puducherry Coasts, urging residents to exercise caution and avoid venturing near the coast.
The rough seas have caused significant damage to fishing boats and infrastructure in the Kasimedu fishing harbor, one of Chennai’s busiest fishing hubs. Authorities have advised fishermen to suspend their operations until the weather improves.
In response to the situation, the Regional Transport Office (RTO) has issued a traffic alert for the coastal areas of Chennai. Motorists are advised to avoid unnecessary travel in these areas and to exercise extreme caution while driving on coastal roads.
“We are closely monitoring the situation and have deployed additional traffic personnel to manage traffic flow in the affected areas. We urge motorists to follow traffic rules and avoid rash driving, especially in areas with high water levels,” stated a senior RTO official.
The RTO has also advised motorists to use alternative routes whenever possible and to avoid parking vehicles near the coast. Additionally, they have urged motorists to be aware of potential hazards, such as fallen debris and flooded roads.
The RTO’s efforts are aimed at ensuring the safety of motorists and minimising disruptions to traffic flow during this challenging time. As the situation continues to evolve, the RTO remains vigilant and committed to providing necessary updates and assistance to the public.
The high waves have caused significant damage to property in Kasimedu, with many fishing boats and huts being damaged. The disruption to fishing activities has also impacted the livelihoods of many people in the area.
