In a bid to combat the persistent air pollution plaguing Delhi and its surrounding National Capital Region (NCR), scientists at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur are proposing a novel solution: artificial rain. This innovative approach involves cloud seeding, a technique that aims to induce rainfall by dispersing substances into clouds to alter their microphysical structure.

The concept of cloud seeding is based on the principle that certain substances, such as silver iodide or salt, can act as condensation nuclei, providing a surface for water vapor to condense around. By introducing these substances into clouds with suitable conditions, scientists can potentially trigger or enhance precipitation

IIT Kanpur’s team, led by Professor Sachchidanand Tripathi, has been actively researching cloud seeding technology for several years. They believe that inducing artificial rain could effectively wash out air pollutants, significantly improving air quality in the region.

The chances of success for this approach are promising, as cloud seeding has been successfully employed in various parts of the world to increase rainfall and mitigate drought conditions. However, it is crucial to note that cloud seeding is not a magic bullet and its effectiveness depends on several factors, including the availability of suitable clouds and the precise timing of the seeding operation

While the potential benefits of artificial rain are considerable, it is important to remember that it is still an experimental approach in the context of air pollution control. Further research and trials are needed to fully assess its efficacy and potential environmental impacts.

In the meantime, residents of Delhi-NCR can take several measures to protect themselves from the harmful effects of air pollution:

Limit outdoor exposure: Whenever possible, avoid spending extended periods outdoors, especially during peak pollution hours.

Wear masks: When outdoors, wear a high-quality mask, such as an N95 respirator, to filter out airborne pollutants.

Use air purifiers: Install air purifiers in your home and workplace to improve indoor air quality.

Monitor air quality: Stay updated on air quality levels in your area and avoid outdoor activities when pollution levels are high.

Advocate for clean air: Support policies and initiatives aimed at reducing air pollution from various sources, including vehicular emissions, industrial activities, and crop stubble burning.

By adopting these preventive measures and supporting efforts to address the root causes of air pollution, individuals can contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment for themselves and their communities.
